John MacGilchrist

B4-37

Cmdr. Byrd's Antarctic Expedition

This lithograph was commissioned by the New York Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce and presented to Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd in 1930 to commemorate his successful trip to the South Pole.

It depicts a critical moment during the trip when on November 28, 1929, in order to clear a 10,000-foot peak the crew had to dump supplies from the plane quickly to gain altitude and avoid smashing into a mountain.
